He was in fact the second son of John and Esther Lomas to be baptised Joseph Grindey. The first was baptised in 1797 in Longnor, and no burial record has been found. However, round about that time the Longnor records are in a very poor state or missing (even the BTs), and it is quite possible he was buried in Longnor. Obviously, he died before a second son was given the same name in 1812.

He was also buried at Elkstone in 1891, aged 70, and I am very surprised that there is no headstone. He was quite a wealthy man, so perhaps it has either fallen over and disappeared, or there was no-one left to put one up for him!
