Hello and welcome to all who have ventured in to the Elkstones Archives - we’re sure you will find something of interest...
Please be aware that it is a work in progress and we continue in our efforts to make it user-friendly and varied in content.
The archive is intended as a central store for village historical records, photographs and documentation which we believe will be of local interest. The majority of material has been collected over the last four decades by Margaret and Peter Grant whose meticulous storage and labelling of accounts, receipts, reports and pictures has amounted to a vast and fascinating illustration of life in our small unspoilt Peak District village. Other neighbours and people from further afield have added to the collection and it is now time to ensure that these important resources are not lost; hence this enormous task of digitisation.
We know that there is still plenty more to discover, and ask for your help if you have any additional information about what you see on the site or have unearthed yourself. When you see the sort of items we have included in the archive, it may inspire you to start looking in long unopened cupboards or filing cabinets and recognise the treasures hidden there. People are really interested in what we have already found, as evidenced by the huge number of books we’ve sold.
The website will be constantly updated over coming years but we could not have accomplished this without the generous sponsorship of the South West Peak Partnership in conjunction with the Heritage Lottery Fund. We would also like to thank very sincerely those who have helped to kickstart the project with generous cash donations, contributions to fundraising activities and many hours of voluntary work in editing the material and managing the project.
